Facts About Suicide in Black Men
Black men ages 25-44 saw the most significant increase in suicide rates
Suicide rates among Black men in the U.S. have been rising in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 2018 to 2021, the suicide rate for Black Americans increased by 19.2%, with Black men being disproportionately affected.
Black men are less likely to seek mental health services than their white counterparts due to stigma, lack of culturally competent care, and systemic barriers.
Suicide deaths among Black men may be underreported due to misclassification or stigma. Some deaths labeled as accidents or undetermined intent may, in fact, be suicides.
Only about 25% of Black Americans seek mental health care, compared to 40% of white Americans.
